Log Profiles and Styles

The term “profile” simply refers to a log’s individual shape when viewed as a cross-section. The most common variations are round, square and D-shaped.

Round Logs
Round logs are available in 8-, 10-, and 12-inch diameters
Hand-Peeled Finish
Hand-peeled finish can be applied to 10" or 12"round log and gives the appearance of a timber that has had the bark pulled off by a draw knife.

When choosing a log profile, you’ll need to take into consideration such factors as the overall size of your new home as well as the architectural and aesthetic statement you wish to make.

For example, Heritage Log Homes’ 6x12 and 8x12 hand-hewn logs have rougher surfaces, squared edges and flat sides, a style that might work well for an owner looking the traditional "old fashioned log home." Our optional peeled-log finish might also be a good choice for creating that same effect.

Chinking
In pioneer days the spaces between the logs were filled with scrap materials called chinking and then finished both inside and out with a mortar like material called daubing or dobbing. Today the whole process is referred to singularly as chinking. With Heritage Log Homes the Chinking is for aesthetics only. Since all of our log styles have double log on log joinery chinking it is not required.
8-inch "D" Logs
Perfect for those who prefer a traditional log home exterior, but like a flat wall on the interior.

Rounded logs result in more of a classic log-home look, both inside and out. Whether you’re planning to incorporate a country or contemporary interior design scheme, round always communicates your love and appreciation of the log-home concept.

D-shaped logs offer homeowners flexibility and variety. The rounded sides establish that traditional log look on the exterior, while the flat sides open up a wide range of design possibilities on the interior.

Note that our D-shaped logs come in an 8 inch diameter, and our round logs come in 8-, 10- and 12-inch diameters. This choice should also be determined by the size of your home, your aesthetic goals and your specific home plan design.

Your Heritage Log Homes consultant will be happy to offer advice and work with you in selecting the log profile that best suits your dreams and lifestyle.

Round Logs
8-inch round logs are a good fit for any home especially smaller cottage-like homes. 10-inch round logs fit virtually any home and always looks good. 12-inch round logs are massive and look best on very large structures - such as the Heritage Legacy Series.
